Biography
Jill Ashley Hummel
“I must reach inside myself to find what I already know”
Jill Ashley Hummel developed an appreciation for the arts at a very young age. At merely three years of age she began painting. Her talent was recognized early on and nurtured by her parents. The formative years of Jill’s art career were spent in Santa Barbara at Marymount and Santa Barbara High. It was there Jill Ashley became conscious of her ardor for art. With interest in developing her artistic ability, Jill Ashley applied to several collegiate level art schools. Given her wide acceptance, it was difficult to discern what school would best suit her talents and interest. Concern with living too far from her close-knit family, Jill Ashley declined her admission to The Chicago Art Institute and selected California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC) in San Francisco. Feeling disconnected and uninspired to create, her career at CCAC was short lived. She moved south and completed her studies at the California State University Long Beach with a Bachelor’s in Art. Jill Ashley later obtained her California Art Teaching Credential with additional course work from California State University Northridge.
Jill Ashley taught art for several years at a private schools in Montecito, CA. On occasion she will display her work at various locations in Santa Barbara, including the Contemporary Arts Forum, Giessinger Winery and Theraplay (located in West Los Angeles). She maintains the position as Designer for the Solo Eleganza, a producer of hand painted women’s Italian hand gloves. The gloves are currently sold at two locations in West Hollywood.
Jill Ashley Art was founded in 2002. The business carries out private art lessons, and tutoring for children and adults, freelance design and paintings of various design and styles.
Color, texture and the energy are the inspiration behind Jill Ashley Hummel’s abstract paintings. Persistent in her search for dramatic colors, line and inventive compositions, Hummel juxtaposes shapes and lines of color with energetic yet delicate brushstrokes and fragile textural shapes.
While working from her studios in Santa Barbara, California and New York, New York she finds inspiration from nature, city life, the human experience, and the metaphysical world. Her work reflects the organic landscapes of Santa Barbara and the geometric cityscape of Manhattan. She carefully infuses her spiritual energy when applying textures and forms to each painting. On the canvas, shapes gather to clarify the cubistic arrangements, while the surrounding space dissolves into soft ambient color. Each shape and line has a distinct character, revealing a different emotion. She creates rich and complex compositions, expressing a paradoxical montage. When this is achieved she feels that she has encompassed life’s synergies.
She has sought inspiration from such artists as Georgia O’Keefe, Henri Matisse, Mark Rothko and Wasilly Kandinsky.
